One of the credit reporting agency’s branches in South Africa has disclosed a data breach incident which occurred on Wednesday. The agency admitted that it handed over personal details of its South African customers to the fraudster who was acting as a client.

The Experian did not disclose the exact number of affected users but a report from SABRIC claimed that 24 million South Africans and about 793,749 local businesses have been affected by this data breach.

Experian said that they have informed the authorities regarding the incident who were able to track the individual who was responsible for the breach.

Experian claimed that the data was not used for any of the fraudulent purposes nor did any harm was on the infrastructure or security by the individual.

“Our investigations indicate that an individual in South Africa, purporting to represent a legitimate client, fraudulently requested services from Experian,” the agency said in a statement.

“Our investigations also show that the suspect had intended to use the data to create marketing leads to offer insurance and credit-related services.”

One relieving claim from Experian was that they only handed over the personal information and not any kind of financial information to the fraudster.
