The Telecom Department approved 5G technology and spectrum trials for telecom service providers on Tuesday, May 4. Bharti Airtel, Reliance JioInfocomm, Vodafone Idea, and MTNL will begin 5G trials in various parts of India, including rural, semi-urban, and urban areas.

Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung, C-DOT, and Reliance Jio’s indigenously built technologies are among the telecom gear makers certified for trials. As a result, Chinese gear manufacturers will be excluded from the 5G trials.

Initially, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea put forward plans to conduct trials using Huawei technology. Later, they submitted applications in which the trials will be conducted without the use of Chinese vendors’ technologies.

The government’s new move also suggests that Chinese companies could be barred from participating in the country’s 5G rollout.

Telecom companies will also be able to perform 5G trials using their current spectrum (800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, and 2500 MHz).
