Seven years of updates could drastically increase the usage life of phones, which are today often used for between two to three years.
An idea that would push mobile phones to exceed their average product life which is about two to three years has been proposed and will be taken care of by Germany.
Seven years of update can indeed bring about a great deal of increase in the longevity of mobile devices. The German federal government is trying to make the devices last as long as seven years. Eventually, decreasing the hassle for the users to switch phones on a frequent basis and thereby, leading to lower ewaste.
According to an Engadget storey, Germany is pressuring the European Union to reconsider its previous plan for five years of upgrades and spare parts availability. Manufacturers, on the other hand, are opposed to the notion. DigitalEurope, an industry lobbying group that represents Apple, Google, and Samsung, is pushing for a three-year update mandate.
Apple phones are currently updated for five years, however most Android phones are only updated for three years. Even Samsung’s announcement that it will provide four years of upgrades is new. Longer updates would allow customers to keep their phones for longer, possibly twice as long as the current average of 2.5 to 3.5 years.
