The e-commerce sector is likely to cross Rs 2 crore in turnover by end of the current monetary year 2020-21 with khadi veils, khadi texture, and nectar being the top-selling products.

A marketplace on the e-commerce platform is likely to be launched by KVIC (Khadi and Village Industries Commission) anytime soon after January 1 and is going to have products in the range of 700-800. This decision comes after running for four months in beta mode.

The current list of KVIC consists of products across 58 categories.

KVIC’s recent outbreak on the sales of fake Khadi products over various e-commerce sites was a reason that induced their decision to enter the e-commerce marketplace. In September, KVIC had claimed that it asked various companies in the e-commerce marketplace to remove over 160 web-links that were selling wrongful products in the brand name of Khadi. Over 1,000 firms received legal notices by KVIC as they were “causing damage to its reputation and the loss of work to Khadi artisans”.

KVIC saw a demand for Khadi products even when the stores remained closed due to Covid. Thereby, executing it’s the decision of entering the online world of trading across India. Initially, it launched with masks and eventually, added more variety of products.

The Chief Executive Officer Usha Suresh had told EconomicTimes: “We are in talks with e-commerce players and are targetting online sales in a big way to reach our sales target of Rs.5,000 crore.” She further added, “We are in the process of tying up with Paytm, and are also looking at tie-ups with other e-commerce majors to promote online sales.”

KVIC is aiming at acquiring at least 10 percent of its overall sales from online platforms and channels within the next few years.
