The Maze group has constantly got into the databases of other companies and threatening them for leaking sensitive data. This time a US-based hardware company MaxLinear is the latest victim of the group.

MAXLINER

Founded in 2003, MaxLinear delivers high-performance broadband and networking semiconductors based on its highly integrated radio frequency analog technology. MaxLinear also provides other services including optical networking driver and trans-impedance amplifier ICs for 100G / 400G optical data center networks.

The Attack

The system-on-chip (SOC) manufacturing company MaxLinear has been targeted by the Maze ransomware attack. The company came to know about the intrusion one month after the attack happened.
  • This month, MaxLinear disclosed that its internal computing systems were targeted by the Maze Ransomware, which came into notice on May 24, 2020.
  • According to the notification which was provided by MaxLinear, hackers had gained unauthorized access to the systems from around April 15, 2020, until May 24, 2020, and were able to access the personal and financial details of MaxLinear customers.
  • It was on June 15 when Maze ransomware operators publicly released about 10.3 GB of data, consisting of accounting and financial information, which is just a part of over 1TB of data allegedly stolen by them before encrypting MaxLinear’s systems.

Safety

Organizations are on high target from the Maze group so they have to take adequate precautions so as to not fall in the trap of the group. Corporates should keep the operating systems and all applications up to date, and avoid opening unsolicited email attachments (phishing emails) or downloading cracked software from unofficial sources. Most importantly, frequent backups of sensitive data should be given importance as it can help avoid major damage and recover quickly from any potential attacks.
