Kano, an educational start-up known for creating build-your-own computers for kids, has collaborated with Microsoft to create a DIY touchscreen laptop that runs for Windows 10 S, a lite version of the OS. Kano PC, as called, is a laptop that closely resembles the design of a Surface PC, with an 11.6″ display that latches on to the keyboard panel.

Everything about this Kano PC, right from transparent backing that reveals modular pieces of the computer, to the apps which encourage a tinkering sound and touch, is “specifically designed for the 21st-century classroom”.

Even earlier, Kano released this DIY computer, but those computers were powered by Raspberry Pi 3s and Kano’s own OS. But this time, these PCs will run smoothly on Windows 10. The touchscreen PC is powered by a 1.44 GHz Intel Atom x5-Z8350 quad processor, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage that is upgradable with a microSD card. The PC also consists of an HDMI port, a microphone, a headphone jack, 2 USB ports along with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

Kids can also assemble parts of the PC following a step-by-step storybook or manual. Kids can also refer to an app called “How Computers Work”. It can also create emojis and build codes with binary code. Kano PC is available for pre-order on Kano.me for $299.99 USD. It will first launch in the US, Canada, and the UK on October 21st.
