Microsoft Is Teasing Windows 1.0

It seems that Microsoft is either gearing up for a very odd promotional effort or somebody on the Windows team has hijacked a functioning time machine.

Yesterday, a video was posted by the company which was seen boasting an “all-new Windows 1.0” to its social channels. It even went so far as to completely wipe all its previous posts from the Windows Instagram account, so all you will find is the clip of its logos over these many years. The video scrolls from the simplicity of Windows 10 through the pixelated rainbow flag of Windows XP and Windows 95.

It seems unclear as to what is going on, since Windows has been particularly vague and coy in its responses to queries from followers, telling them only to “Stay Tuned” and “Wait for updates!”. Windows 1.0 was earlier released in November 1985, so there is some speculation this might have a tie-ins with the forthcoming season of Stranger Things (https://www.engadget.com/2019/07/01/whats-on-tv/).

Whatever the situation is, the stunt is giving Windows’ social media managers a chance to load their replies to confused tweets with throwbacks.

Windows 1.0 was the first ever result of Microsoft Windows lineage. The 16-bit platform was built earlier in order to run graphical programs on top of an installation of MS-DOS, and it was one of the earliest efforts to transform processing of line commands to a more visual experience. Bill Gates decided to head the project and saw Windows 1.0 as an important direction for his company.

Back in the present day, curiosity still continues as today, the Windows social accounts followed up the video with another throwback. The image features familiar software like Microsoft Word and Microsoft Flight Simulator in their box-packaged, 1985 glory.
