Windows 11 is getting some much-needed taskbar and Start menu improvements

The taskbar in Windows 11 is a huge step back in usability when compared to Windows 10, but Microsoft is starting to make improvements. A new update being tested by Windows Insiders restores the clock and date to the taskbar on secondary or multiple monitors. It’s a welcome change for multi-monitor users, who previously had to rely on third-party apps like ElevenClock to get this basic functionality in Windows 11.

I’ve been outspoken in my criticism of the changes made to the taskbar in Windows 11. I despise the new taskbar, so I’m relieved to see Microsoft make this first change. There’s still a lot to be improved, and we’re hoping to see the return of the ability to drag and drop files onto taskbar apps, as well as general customization options.

In addition, Microsoft is making changes to the Start menu in Windows 11. The most recent 22509 Insider build adds the ability to customise the Start menu to show more pins or more recommendations instead. This makes the Start menu more customizable, though many Windows 11 users also use third-party apps in this area.

As part of Microsoft’s ongoing effort to include more Control Panel settings in the main Settings app, the latest Windows 11 build includes more improvements to the Settings app. “We have moved the advanced sharing settings (such as Network discovery, File and printer sharing, and public folder sharing) to a new page in the Settings app under Advanced Network Settings,” says Amanda Langowski, Microsoft’s Windows Insider programme manager.

The pages in the Printers & Scanners section have also been improved, and some parts of the Control Panel will now redirect Windows 11 users to the main Settings app instead. Microsoft appears to be getting closer to ditching the Control Panel in favour of its more modern Settings app. However, none of these features will be available for several months.
