YouTube now gives its users more control over the content. According to the reports, YouTube is rolling out new features designed to give viewers more control over what they watch. The new features will help viewers explore topics and related videos they are interested in, and remove suggestions and recommendations they are not interested in.
In a post on the Official YouTube Blog, YouTube explains how and why it is “doing more to put you in the driver’s seat”. It states that it wants to help viewers find new passions and interests and that viewers are the true experts who are able to do that.
Since YouTube is making exploring topics and related videos easier, these topics will be visible both at the top of your homepage (when you scroll up) and on the Up Next section below the video that you are currently watching.
Also, now viewers can stop certain channels from being recommended. They can now tell YouTube to stop recommending videos from particular channels, and this can be done by simply clicking on the three-dot menu next to a video and selecting “Don’t recommend channel” from the dropdown list. YouTube also explains why it recommends videos to you. When YouTube recommends videos based on hat other viewers have watched, you will see an information box underneath the video.
It seems that these changes are a response to complaints that YouTube’s algorithms can send viewers down rabbit holes. An example being that watching one video taking an objective look at the anti-vax movement would provide countless videos supporting that view.
These changes are rolling out and will appear on iOS and Android, and on desktop soon. This is also the perfect opportunity for the viewers to review all the channels they have subscribed to.
