The tech behemoth Amazon is next in line to build an app named, “Project Mic” that will allow anybody to create and broadcast a live radio show complete with music. The purpose of this initiative, according to The Verge, is to demystify and reimagine radio. The app’s initial focus will be on the United States.
Listeners may access the show via the app, as well as Amazon Music, Audible, Twitch, and Alexa-enabled devices. Listeners will be able to communicate with shows using only their voice with the Alexa devices. The app will also be optimized for use in cars, furthering Amazon’s goal of reinventing radio.
The Verge saw a prototype app image that displays a screen featuring live programs, popular themes like #NBA or #hot100, and highlighted artists. Users will be able to look for information based on a topic, a person, or music.
Anyone will be able to use Amazon’s music library to create their own playlist.
To help launch the app and load it with content, the business plans to employ celebrity talent as well as smaller tastemakers. Despite the fact that the app is heavily centered on music, programming will focus on three other areas: pop culture, comedy, and sports.
Amazon joins the likes of Apple, Spotify, and even Sonos in attempting to program radio-adjacent material with this app.
All of these firms collaborate with music curators to conduct shows and attempt to digitally duplicate the radio experience.
