Elon Musk’s Starlink broadband, provided via orbital satellites, is scheduled to launch in India in 2022. Users will be warned not to use Starlink to share torrents or copyrighted content. A Starlink user known as substrate-97 said on Reddit that he was downloading pirated content without a VPN to see what would happen, and that he got a notice from the company as a result. He posted a screenshot of the note on Reddit.
The thread attracted users from all over the world who wondered if Starlink’s policy differed by country. A client, Nydilien, wrote in to inquire if the rule will apply in Switzerland, where there is no such cap.
On the other hand, a Canadian user pointed out that downloading pirated material can result in legal action. There are corporations in Canada who actually sue anybody who can provide them with an IP address.
The Copyright Act in India has similar piracy laws, with criminals facing a three-year jail sentence and a fine of up to Rs 3 lakh for streaming, copying, displaying, or duplicating illegal content. Users, on the other hand, circumvent the laws by using a virtual private network (VPN), which encrypts the link and prevents the ISP.
Starlink users can now “cheat” by using a VPN rather than an open connection, according to Reddit users.
Elon Musk has confirmed that Starlink will be mobile and capable of providing speeds of up to 300 Mbps, making it especially useful for users in areas with limited or no network coverage. Starlink is currently accepting pre-orders via its website for a $99.00 refundable deposit. It does not, however, guarantee its customers’ services. According to Space-X, Starlink has received over half a million pre-orders.
