Twitch has confirmed unequivocally that credentials were not compromised in last week’s big data leak. “Twitch passwords have not been exposed,” Twitch stated in an update to its security issue webpage. “We are also confident that systems that store Twitch login credentials, which are hashed with bcrypt, were not accessed, nor were full credit card numbers or ACH / bank information.”
Last week, what looked to be leaked Twitch source code surfaced on the web, and Twitch verified this in a Friday post. “The exposed data mostly comprised documents from Twitch’s source code repository, as well as a subset of creator compensation data,” according to the firm. Twitch maintains that the leaked information “only affected a small proportion of users, and the consumer effect is limited,” and that it is following up with people who were affected personally.
Sources who talked to The Verge last week painted a picture of a firm with poor security standards and revealed a previously unknown security incident that occurred in 2017. Vice reported on another major hack that occurred in 2014 on Thursday. Twitch stated in its Friday update that it had “taken steps to further protect our service.”
