According to a Lookout analysis, mobile phishing exposure increased 161 percent in the energy business between the second half of 2020 and the first half of 2021.
According to the findings, the following events occurred in the energy business between July 1, 2020 and June 30, 2021:
In the first half of 2021, 20% of energy personnel were subjected to a mobile phishing assault, a 161% rise over the second half of 2020. Energy businesses were the target of 17.2 percent of all assaults originating on mobile endpoints, making the industry the most popular among cybercriminals and nation-state sponsored attackers. The average mobile app threat exposure rate was 7.6 percent, which was nearly double the average across all industries combined. By continuing to utilise out-of-date versions of Android OS, 56 percent of Android users were exposed to roughly 300 exploitable vulnerabilities.
Moreover, 95 percent of mobile app risks were caused by riskware and vulnerabilities. North America (11.2 percent), APAC (13.2 percent), and EMEA had the highest rates of mobile phishing exposure (15.8 percent ). Employees in EMEA and APAC were 41 percent and 18 percent more likely, respectively, to be subjected to a mobile phishing assault than their counterparts in North America.
Energy companies offer the infrastructure required for society’s safety and well-being. Recent occurrences, such as the Colonial Pipeline leak, highlight how vulnerable the energy business is to hackers.
As iOS, Android, and ChromeOS devices become more important in digital transformation programmes, it is critical to secure the mobile endpoints that employees use to accomplish their tasks. Protecting against mobile phishing and app attacks allows energy companies to thwart cyberattackers who aim to steal passwords and data or interrupt operations with ransomware.
