A representative for Cyber Command, the US military’s hacking division, acknowledged to CNN Sunday that the command had initiated aggressive measures to target cybercriminal gangs that have committed ransomware operations on US corporations.
The representative remained tight-lipped on the command’s measures. However, in one of the first clear statements by Cyber Command following the Colonial Pipeline ransomware incident clarified in May that the command is after cybercriminals who keep the systems of US firms captive.
According to the New York Times, posts by Gen. Paul Nakasone, chief of Cyber Command and director of the National Security Agency, indicate that the US military’s computer investigators are extremely eager to target cybercriminals who present a hazard to key infrastructure.
Last month, Nakasone revealed that the US government has “carried a surge” over ransomware attackers, included attempting to choke off the hackers’ financing channels. In a conversation with the New York Times this weekend, Nakasone reaffirmed his warning.
