Following worker protests and an inquiry that found unsatisfactory living circumstances, Apple Inc. placed Foxconn Technology Group’s facility in southern India on probation. Apple conducted an assessment and discovered that distant dining rooms and dorms used by employees did not satisfy the company’s standards.

Foxconn, which utilizes the factory to build iPhones and other electronics, apologized for the health violations and promised to overhaul its management and operations in the nation. Following the demonstrations, the plant in Sriperumbudur, on the outskirts of Chennai, was shut down and would reopen once “necessary improvements” have been completed.

According to local media, food illness afflicted over 250 women who worked at the Foxconn facility, with more than 150 of them ending up in the hospital.

Foxconn apologized and stated it was looking into the matter.

The tech firm said in a statement, “We are very sorry for the issue our employees experienced and are taking immediate steps to enhance the facilities and services we provide.”

Apple has not defined probation, although it has previously refused to grant new contracts to facilities on probation unless their issues are remedied.

Apple’s spokesperson said, “Following recent concerns about food safety and accommodation conditions at Foxconn Sriperumbudur, we dispatched independent auditors.

“We found that some of the remote dormitory accommodations and dining rooms being used for employees do not meet our requirements, and we are working with the supplier to ensure a comprehensive set of corrective actions are rapidly implemented.”

17,000 people work at the iPhone facility, which is around 25 miles (40 kilometers) from Chennai.

The Tamil Nadu state government has requested that Foxconn reassess its worker facilities as a result of the food poisoning incidences and subsequent demonstrations.

The local management team and systems are in up-gradation by the company Foxconn, and the business claimed it will continue to pay all employees throughout the downtime.

According to the Tamil Nadu government, Foxconn has promised to enlarge living quarters, update bathing facilities, and offer drinking water to staff, and will begin operations shortly.
