The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) has been targeted in a cyberattack.
The agency was subjected to a significant cyberattack in the early hours of Christmas Eve, its executive director confirmed.
The Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) is Scotland’s environmental regulator and national flood forecasting, flood warning and strategic flood risk management authority. Its key function is to protect and improve the environment in Scotland.
Executive director David Pirie said the attack was launched at 00:01 on Christmas Eve.
The cyberattack affected the communications systems of SEPA Significantly.
“The attack is impacting our contact centre, internal systems, processes and internal communications” said David Pirie.
“We immediately enacted our robust business continuity arrangements, with our core regulatory, monitoring, flood forecasting and warning services adapting and continuing to operate,” he said.
“Our emergency management team is working with the Scottish Government, Police Scotland and the National Cyber Security Centre to respond to what appears to be complex and sophisticated criminality.
Its contact centre is affected and it says people who need to get in touch should use Twitter or Facebook.
