On Friday, India condemned “vaccine nationalism,” which refers to attempts by some developing countries to stockpile vaccines while refusing to share intellectual property rights in order to maximise profits from Covid-related vaccines and therapeutics.

New Delhi also requested more support for its World Trade Organization proposal, which it made with South Africa, to postpone the adoption, submission, and compliance of certain parts of the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) related to the prevention, containment, and treatment of Covid-19 until a majority of the world’s population has gained immunity.

While delivering the inaugural address at the two-day virtual conference, Sanjay Bhattacharyya, India’s BRICS Sherpa and secretary (consular, passport and visa, and overseas Indian affairs) at the foreign ministry claimed India and South Africa have asked WTO members, especially those from the developed world, to agree to provide IPR exemptions so that developing countries can get vaccines.
