Epik has reported recently about the latest data breach that has happened leaking 180 GB of data from the online data server. According to Epik, there was an “unauthorized intrusion” in their systems. Reportedly, there is a group of hacktivists behind this data breach, called Anonymous who had altered Epik’s official knowledge base.
According to Wikipedia, Epik is an American domain registrar and web hosting company known for providing services to websites that host far-right, neo-Nazi, and other extremist content. It has been described as a haven for the far-right because of its willingness to provide services to far-right websites that have been denied service by other Internet service providers.
Epik data breach affected non-consumers also
Reports have also shown that the affected users are not only from Epik’s database, but it included millions of non-consumers too. According to Arstechnicia, “This occurred as Epik had scraped WHOIS records of domains, even those not owned by the company, and stored these records. In doing so, the contact information of those who have never transacted with Epik directly was also retained in Epik’s systems.”
Epik said in a statement that the data breach monitoring service has started sending alerts to the subscribers whose email id were exposed in the data breach. During this data breach, a lot of non-consumers also served as bait for the hackers.
Epik has suggested its users be alert of any further activities but has also assured them that they are taking care of everything.
