Facebook has been outspaced by a homegrown app from Australian Broadcasting Company, after the recent news of heightening rifts between the Australian government and the tech giant.
Facebook’s decision to ban news appearance on Australian news feed is the cause of action here. But the impact on the Australians shifting to other sources like ABC, presents an optimistic shift in media consumption.
Comparisons are being made in ways that cannot be ignored, such as the spread of any sort of misinformation on this platform is less than the usual day-to-day happenings on Facebook. The stories do not disappear after a span of 24 hours here. ABC App is second in the list of free iOS app downloads within Australia, while Facebook is on the ninth position.
Facebook’s perception on paying the news outlets is that “business gain from news is minimal”. Also, as it states, the news composed is “less than 4% of the content.”
“The idea of shutting down the sorts of sites they did yesterday, as some sort of threat — well, I know how Australians react to that and I thought that was not a good move on their part,” said Prime Minister Scott Morrison. Facebook also mentioned that Google is tie up with news, a key reason behind why Google did not continue its revolt against ghe Australian regulation for long.
Google has signed a multi-year partnership with Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. The deal will stay in effect till the next week three years.
