According to Comms Council members that offer services to some of the UK’s critical infrastructure organisations, such as the police, the National Health Service, and other public resources, the strikes are an attack on the country’s key telecoms infrastructure.

The council is now collaborating with the UK government, the National Cyber Security Centre, the communications regulator Ofcom, and other international organisations to share information about the assaults and figure out the best ways to counter them.

An unspecified number of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) providers have been targeted by the attacks. On Wednesday, business VoIP company Voipfone self-identified as one of the victims.

The Comms Council has been contacted by the Daily Swig for clarification on the number of victims and other information regarding the DDoS attacks. The trade body declined to speculate on the number of organisations targeted, citing commercial concerns, but did issue a statement confirming the breadth of the cyber-attack effort.

The attacks are “unprecedented” in the history of the Comms Council UK since its inception in 2004, according to a spokeswoman.
