Instagram is now all set to launch its advancement in the application. Now, Instagram might offer a little more reassurance if your account has never been hacked. The social network is currently testing an in-app account recovery process that would make it easy to recover hacked accounts and make it even harder for the thieves to get away with the act in the first place.

Where you presently have to either wait for an email or fill up a support form, the updated approach now uses the app to ask for different types of information like your original email address or phone number.

Then you’ll get a six-digit code sent to the contact info of your choice, and with this, the hackers will no longer be able to use an email address or phone number codes to take over your account from a different device. “When you regain access to your account, we will take additional measures to ensure a hacker cannot use codes sent to your email address [or] phone number to access your account from a different device.” said an Instagram spokesperson.

This new method would also ensure that the users could recover their accounts even when the usernames and contact info have been changed by an intruder. This also means that Instagram is now providing a safeguard that ensures that a username can’t be claimed for a period of time after account changes, whether it’s a hack or a voluntary change.

The goal of the new recovery process is to recover hacked accounts entirely within the app, rather than depending on the security team. This won’t prevent account hijacks, but it could discourage preparators hoping to take advantage of vulnerabilities during the current recovery approach. It’s not certain when the in-app recovery would be available, although the username lockdown is now available to Android users and deploying to iOS users.
