An unknown hacker made claims of having stolen data consisting personal details of 7 million Israelis out of a total population of 9.4 million, the source platform being CITY4U website.  The CITY4U website is used by the government of Israel for collection of payments involving “property taxes, fines and utility bills”.

As per the National Cyber Directorate, the documents revealed so far are all outdated and so the relevancy of the data leak claims are still being verified.

The attacker made its hacking attempts public through Telegram, on Sunday, with a number of photographs as a form of evidence for the same being presented on Monday. The photographs presented were that of Israeli identity cards and driving licenses alongside tax bills. These leaked documents were spread across by means of Telegram and other hacking forums over the internet.

The attacker presented their intentions of selling off the data however, with no quoted price being specified on the forefront but stated that the coming days would witness more number of documents attained by the hackers during the hacking attempt. The attacker expressed joy as he made the attack official by exclaiming it as his “first Jewish New Yera’s surprise”.

The purported attack appears to be similar to a ransomware attack on Israel’s Shirbit insurance company last year. The data leak, if found truthful, can be then termed as one of the greatest cyber-attack in Israeli history.
