In October, data of more than three million CoinMarketCap (CMC) users got leaked during a massive data breach. According to the statistics of HypeStat, every day, over 27 million people from the US, India, and Japan among other nations visit the platform to price-track and stay updated on cryptocurrency.
Crypto communities are witnessing a huge increase in the number of data hacks and breaches that have been happening very regularly. A data breach of this magnitude has made everyone fearful of crypto hackers. Despite several nations still being skeptical about legalizing cryptocurrencies, the crypto space is witnessing rapid expansion in many parts of the world.
The attackers behind this breach are reportedly nefarious cybercriminals. Registered email addresses of approximately 3,117,548 CMC users were obtained illegally and uploaded on the dark web. CMC has acknowledged this data breach while noting that the passwords of these leaked email addresses remain safe.
According to the reports of Gadgets 360, “While the data lists we have seen are only email addresses (no passwords), we have found a correlation with our subscriber base. We have not found any evidence of a data leak from our own servers — we are actively investigating this issue and will update our subscribers as soon as we have any new information,” the CryptoPotato report quoted a CMC representative as saying.
A lot of cryptocurrency-based companies are suffering from alleged data breaches and hacks for the past few months. This huge data breach was an awakening call for many companies on how to keep their data safe from the hands of the data hackers.
