The personal details of an undisclosed number of current and former employees of the Canadian firm, Marijuana Business Daily, was leaked in the data breach at Aurora Cannabis.
The email sent to the victim of the data breach relates to Dec. 25, “a cybersecurity incident in which unauthorized parties accessed data in (Microsoft cloud software) SharePoint and OneDrive.” The email was shared with MJBizDaily.
The victim of the incident was a former employee of Aurora laid off with hundreds of others in February 2020. The victim was not informed of a violation until late in the afternoon of Dec. 31.
The source said that working for Alberta-based Aurora was “an experience that I think a lot of people want to forget about.”
“And then getting a reminder on the last day of 2020, just a few hours before the end of 2020, was just a bit of a kick in the face,” he said.
The former employee said he was referring to three current Aurora staff and five other former employees whose details had been revealed.
He claimed that each individual reported different data, including credit card information, government identity, home addresses and banking details, compromised during the violation.
Speaker Michelle Lefler reported on Christmas that the firm “was subject to an incident of cybersecurity” which had an effect on both current and former staff, but did not confirm what kind of personal details had been disclosed.
“The company took immediate steps to alleviate the incident, consulted security experts actively and cooperated with the authorities,” he wrote in a statement.
“Not affected are the patient systems of Aurora and the network of operations of the company.”
Lefler said she could not include the amount of Aurora workers whose data had been disclosed.
“I can confirm that we have been following all security protocols, working with privacy and law enforcement councils and have contacted any affected current or former employees directly,” she wrote.
She did not respond to an MJBizDaily investigation as to whether Aurora employees outside Canada were involved in the violation and did not indicate who the authorities Aurora told of the violation.
Aurora trades as ACB on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange.
